Laura Washburn Hutton
I am a food writer and cook. I was born in California, spent 10 years in France, raised my family in London, and now I’m spending time in France again, in the Gascony village of Fourcès.
Since 2004, I have written and translated over 15 cookbooks (you can see a list here). In 2015, I won the prestigious Fortnum & Mason Online Food Writer award for my blog, Bad Vinaigrette.
When I was first a student in France, and spoke not a word of French, the kitchen was a place where all language was understood. During those formative years, I learned to cook while learning the language and I developed a love for the place, which has never diminished.
After attending The American University in Paris, I was an intern at L’Ecole de Cuisine LaVarenne in Paris and Burgundy. My first job out of cooking school was as assistant to the renowned American food writer Patricia Wells and I helped compile and test the recipes for her first book with the influential French chef, Joel Robüchon.
Two children, a country move and a few careers later, I taught cooking in several London schools including Divertimenti and Cookery School at Little Portland Street.
In 2020, despite everything going on in the world (Covid, Brexit…), I suggested to my British husband that we needed to divide our time between London and France. He always listens, so we found a little place in a small circular village in Le Gers, in southwest France. From this base, and now our home half of the year, I also encourage long leisurely lunches in the garden as part of my Cooking Workshops and Market Tours program, all in English.
